What It Is
This semester I took a class called Black Popular Culture. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I always walk into the unexpected waiting to be dazzled, (I like the razzle and dazzle of it all). In this class my Prof. Dr. Kyra Gaunt asked us what Black Popular Culture was to us at the beginning and end of the semester. At the beginning I answered with simple "Beyonce, Dance routines, and MJ." As seasoned vet in this course (wink wink) now my answered changed. I thought about what my Black Popular Culture was and my professor describes my answer as an inside out perspective. S/N my answer is coming just giving you some insight. I talked about what made me think since I had been apart of the class. I thought about the many aspects of my life and came up with the answer you're about to read. I'm also including pictures of myself and my family to give you some more perspective into my world.
"Black Popular Culture to me is growing up in a house that made it thorough music. Its when "Ribbon in the Sky" is the shower song for you and your neighbors. It's "Real Love" making you a sandwich for lunch before you leave. It's leaving with the affirmation of, "do your best and never settle" meeting you at the door. That is my Black Popular Culture."
As you can see my answer dives into early life I had with my family our morning routines, which were some of my happiest times interacting with them. Black Popular Culture is just making sure that the conversation isn't a one colored convo. BPC is making sure the conversation is happening across the board...
This is a testimony to the knowledge that was shared with me within this class, and appreciation to look past this look into my family-hood and into my role as gatekeeper of the knowledge that I learned. Thank you...
